Though the venerable men’s magazine and self-described “lifestyle brand” has not made an official announcement, reliable sources have it that Playboy Magazine has switched from a QuarkXPress-based workflow to InDesign.

Playboy Magazine switches to InDesign

Quark VS InDesign reader John Schubert alerted us to this juicy tidbit. A member of the InDesign Talk mailing list stated the following:

“

Our circulation manager is married to a senior designer at Playboy Magazine, and she told me today that they are switching the Editorial staff over to InDesign starting next week; with the ad designers to follow. They’re taking a 2-week training session to make the transition.

Witty responses about feathered edges, drop shadows and stroked type will follow I’m sure….

”

Author and trainer Anne-Marie Concepcion confirmed the news: “I’m their InDesign trainer! Just finished the first session today … eight art directors. Having lots of fun!”

By the time of this writing, Playboy’s conversion to InDesign should be complete.

If any Quark VS InDesign readers subscribe to Playboy Magazine, let us know if the next few issues look different, with InDesign-only features like transparency, feathering, or paragraph composition, than prior issues. I would expect the InDesign-produced issues to begin appearing with the April release (May or June cover date).

2. Playboy Germany, which is published under license by Burda, switched to InDesign and InCopy with K4 Publishing System in 2002.

   Birgit: Thanks for filling in that question. I had intended to reference in the original article the German edition’s conversion when Playboy switched to Burda. I thought I had mentioned it, as a matter of fact, until I just re-read it. In my haste to get the story out, I inadvertantly omitted that fact. Thank’s for filling it in for me!

Add Your Paragraph and Character Styles to All New InDesign Documents Automatically

Got paragraph and character styles you use frequently? Maybe you took our advice and created basic, global character styles for bold, italic, bold-italic, and regular. Save yourself some serious time loading your commonly used styles into new documents—make them part of the default for all new documents.

Open InDesign (or InCopy) but don’t open a document. From the flyout menu on the Paragraph Styles or Character Styles panel choose the Load All Text Styles command. You’ll be prompted to find a document containing the desired styles. Find and select that, and then pick the styles you want. When they import to the Paragraph Styles and/or Character Styles panels, with no documents opened, those style become available by default for all new documents you create.
